MOVIE OF THE WEEK: THE READER

The Reader

The Reader took home one award (Best Actress) from five total nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, but its most prestigious award is from thatssofetch.com, who gives it the award for Most Unnecessary Dong in a Motion Picture. Not only was there way too much flaccid man-meat in this movie, but a plethora http://thatssofetch.com/images/readerpost.jpgof unnecessary nudity in general – both male and female. It was like watching a soft core adult film (that’s PC for porn) in which the characters were naked, but merely talked the entire movie. It was like getting the prom queen into bed, and subsequently learning she only wants to “talk”.

The first half of the movie involves a sexual relationship in post-WWII Germany between a 15-year-old boy and a 36-year-old woman who loves to be read to, hence the name: The Reader. The movie has an extraordinary vibe to it, but even as the characters age they remain as static as ever. Kate Winslet’s performance was moving and nothing but great in the first hour of this movie, but not as special as fellow nominee Meryl Streep’s performance in Doubt.

It’s a very artistic and inspired movie, but not quite Best Picture material. If you’ve already seen the other Best Picture nominees, it would definitely be worth it to round out the category and add this to your must see list.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK (01.27.09) – DOUBT

TSF Movie of the Week - Doubt

It’s a shame that Doubt wasn’t awarded for Outstanding Performance – Cast at last night’s SAG awards because this movie was without a doubt (pun intended) the best acting performance of 2008. Although the story was lacking, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and the incredibly moving Viola Davis were all superb. I can’t remember the last time that three people (Adams, Hoffman, Davis) from the same movie were all nominated for best supporting actor/actress Academy Awards. All nominations are deserving and Adams should take home the award.

Amy Adams In Doubt

Not to mention, Amy Adams is one of the most exquisite women on the planet – even dressed as a nun she was visually stunning – one of those people who needs to be famous because they are so naturally attractive. Unfortunately, the screenplay fell short for this play-turned-movie, but an incredible cast made this film a must see of the 2009 Oscar season.
