NEW (RAP) SONGS FOR YOUR iPOD
BEASTIE BOYS
“TOO MANY RAPPERS (FEAT. NAS)”
Welcome back MCA, Mike D, and Ad Rock. It’s been too long. The Beastie Boys officially have their ill licenses back and have returned with the first single from their first (non-instrumental) album since 2004. “Too Many Rappers” calls back to late-80s and early-90s Beastie hip-hop. A simple drum beat that feels like it was transplanted from 1994’s Ill Communication supplements the back-and-forth MCing that we have grown to love from the BBoys. Their new album is titled Hot Sauce Commitee P. 1 and hits stores September 15.

KID CUDI
“MAKE HER SAY (FEAT. KANYE WEST & COMMON”
Cleveland-born, Brooklyn-based rapper Kid Cudi’s debut album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, doesn’t drop until September, but the first two singles released make it one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Paired with Kanye West, Kid Cudi has released two solid hip-hop songs in the smash hit “Day ‘N Nite” and now “Make Her Say”, a track that features Kanye and Common with some “Pokerface” GaGa samples. Kanye thankfully drops the whole vocoder phase and actually raps, as Cudi further solidifies himself as a mainstay in modern rap.

NEW SONGS FOR YOUR iPOD (07.14.09)
LUPE FIASCO
“SHINING DOWN”
“Shining Down” is the latest track from Chicago-based rapper Lupe Fiasco. A song that further solidifies him as one of the best rappers in the game right now. Get it and add it to your summer mix and play it for your friends. They’ll think you’re cool. I promise.

THE AVETT BROTHERS
“I AND LOVE AND YOU”
The Avett Brothers are the best folk band of the 21st century and it’s a shame that you aren’t listening to them. Saying that you are missing out would be an understatement. “I and Love and You” is from their July 7th EP release of the same name. I could only find a live version for this post, but do yourself a favor and download the studio version. If you enjoy folk music at all, this song should be on your iPod.
A more polished sound doesn’t distract from the raw talent of this North Carolina-based trio. This is definitely one of the better songs they’ve recorded. Discover more about The Avett Brothers on TSF here.

CAGE THE ELEPHANT
“AIN’T NO REST FOR THE WICKED”
Cage The Elephant is a southern rock band from Kentucky with extreme influence by British Rock, most notably the best band of my lifetime, Arctic Monkeys. At some points, they’re too similar and the lead singer sounds like he’s trying to emulate Alex Turner of AM. Regardless, this song deserves a spot on your iPod and a place on your summer playlist. From their 2009 self-titled release. Also check out “In One Ear”, which is probably the better track, but not as single-friendly.

PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS
“ACID RAINDROPS”
People Under The Stairs are a hip-hop duo from Los Angeles with a stripped-down, underground hip-hop style. The beats take a back seat to the flow in songs that could almost be a cappella and you’d still listen to it. “Acid Raindrops” is from 2002’s The OM Years. (thanks to Alex N. for the email suggestion)

GREEN DAY
“PEACEMAKER”
Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown was released on May 15, and this is the best song from the album. It’s very non-Green Day in a way. It’s unique, and they did a really damn good job with it. A+. Check out “East Jesus Nowhere” and “Horseshoes and Handgrenades” from Breakdown as well.

WHITE LIES
“FAREWELL TO THE FAIRGROUND”
White Lies‘ To Lose My Life is the best record of 2009 so far. I can’t stop listening to it. I posted my favorite track from the album, “E.S.T.”, back in April, and this song is my second favorite … but really, the entire album is fantastic. It sounds like it was recorded in 1985 and they hid it underground for 23 years, and they’ve just now decided to release it. And it doesn’t sound pretentious and overdone like most wannabe-80s shit coming out right now.

KETTCAR
“GRACELAND”
Kettcar gets the distinction as being the first ever non-English song posted on “New Songs For Your iPod“. Not only is this a great song, but the entire song is in German, except for this part of the chorus: “This is Graceland baby, Elvis has left the building.” I have no idea what they’re saying for the rest of the song, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s well done.

BRITISH ROCK EDITION
MAXIMO PARK
“BOOKS FROM BOXES”
Maximo Park is a highly successful British rock band who hasn’t yet made a splash in the states. Their name is adapted from Maximo Gomez, a Cuban militant, and they’ve had two double platinum albums since 2005. This song is my favorite … so far, and it’s from 2007’s Our Earthly Pleasures.

BABYSHAMBLES
“CARRY UP ON THE MORNING”
Babyshambles is an indie British rock band formed by Pete Doherty, formerly of The Libertines. This song is from their 2007 release, Shotter’s Nation. Check out “Delivery” as well from the same album.

GALLOWS
“ORCHESTRA OF WOLVES”
This is without a doubt the most hard rock song I’ve ever posted on TSF. It teeters on the hardcore genre, and can definitely be classified as punk - and not like New Found Glory pop-punk - this is actual punk rock. Rarely do I like punk, but this band is badass. I’ll add them to the like 3 punk bands I like. This song is from 2007’s Orchestra of Wolves.

This week I’ve got great hip-hop, rock, and country songs. If you can’t find something you like here, I can’t do anything else for you. Enjoy…
MADCON
“BEGGIN”
A great hip-hop song that’s bound to take off this summer. Expect to hear this from car stereos and iPod buds in the coming months. Download it now and have it before your friends do.

PAPER ROUTE
“CAROUSEL”
Ooooh another good rock song released in the year 2009. It’s one of few. Nashville-based Paper Route have just released their first major label debut, Absence, and this track is outstanding. It’s by far the best song on the album.

LEE ANN WOMACK
“LAST CALL”
I don’t do a lot of country music for “New Songs For You iPod” posts, but here you go. A great song by the legendary Lee Ann Womack. Can’t stop listenin’ to this one from her 2008 release.

KID CUDI
“DAY ‘N NITE”
I love this song and it should immediately be added to any summer mixes you will be making. The remix is much more dance friendly, but I like the stripped down version better. I hung out with Kid Cudi last week, he’s a cool dude. His album hits stores late summer.

TINTED WINDOWS
“DEAD SERIOUS”
Supergroup Tinted Windows released the first album last week, and “Dead Serious” is definitely the best track.

KELLY CLARKSON
“I DO NOT HOOKUP”
Great pop song. Actually written and recorded by Katy Perry, and Kelly Clarkson decided to release it as a single. Hear Katy Perry’s version here. Also, get “Long Shot” by Kelly Clarkson - arguably the best song on her new album.
