PAUL’S BOUTIQUE 20th ANNIVERSARY

Beastie Boys

In 1989, the greatest hip hop group of all time released one of the most influential albums ever recorded. Paul’s Boutique was the second album released by rap trio Beastie Boys and features some of the most intricate production qualities of any album ever recorded. With over 105 total songs and sounds sampled for Paul’s Boutique, it is one of the most musically diverse and well-respected urban albums the genre has ever seen. Along with 1986’s License To Ill, Paul’s Boutique was widely known as one of the most secretly respected rap albums in the black community. Public Enemy’s own Chuck D admitted in an interview with Vibe magazine that Paul’s Boutique was a “dirty secret” in the hip hop community for having “the best beats”.

The album has gained more respect with age and is ironically very popular in the “indie/hipster” community. You know – those people who don’t like sports and shop exclusively at Whole Foods. Paul’s Boutique has settled into the realm of “cool” for hipsters and is universally known as the “only good rap album” by Radiohead and Of Montreal fans everywhere.

Now, twenty years after its release, this album is still as fresh as it was in the summer of ‘89. If you’ve never listened to Beastie Boys, here’s your chance to make it up to yourself. Go buy the remastered, 20th Anniversary Edition of Paul’s Boutique.

No party is complete without the dance track, “Hey Ladies” – a song that was way before its time and still has one of the best beats of any hip hop song:
