THE BEST MOVIES OF 2008

http://thatssofetch.com/images/cris.jpg

Last year was a superb year for the motion picture business.  A lot of great movies were released and I have taken this opportunity to share with you the best of the best in each category.  It was a great year highlighted by the resurgence of the great Woody Allen and two of the best, if not the best, superhero movies in American film history.  In 2008, the late Heath Ledger graced us with one of the best performances we have ever and will ever see on the big screen.  If you haven’t seen these movies, bookmark this list and be sure to rent these movies in 2009.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to see the following films yet, which saddens me deeply because I know they are most likely great:

Frost/Nixon
Milk
Doubt

So you could basically call this The Best Movies of 2008 (not counting Milk, Frost/Nixon, or Doubt)

NERDS REJOICE

It appears as though they are releasing The Dark Knight on Blue-Ray for the low low price of $65 … but you get a bad ass LIMITED EDITION Bat-Pod Display Case!  The Dark Knight comes out on home video (do we still say that?) on December 9th.  I hope to have a limited edition Bat-Pod under my Christmas tree this year.

VIDEO GAME ADDICTION IS SERIOUS BUSINESS

In this video a young British child is “addicted” to the popular video game World of Warcraft.  They refer to his addiction as an “illness”.  You’ve got to be kidding me.  Playing a video game hours on end is not an illness.  I can name like 500 other things I’d rather have wrong with me than playing a video game too much.  I love how he changes his accent though when he talks in the game … I LOL’d ….

MUST LOVE JAWS

WEEKLY POP CULTURE UPDATE (9.3.08)

SONG OF THE WEEK YEAR

Ben Folds - “You Don’t Know Me”

This song is absolutely phenomenal.  It’s the first single from his upcoming album, Way To Normal, which is set for release on September 30th.  I can’t wait to hear this album and write the stellar review it will undoubtedly deserve.
Listen to the song on Ben Folds’s MySpace.

For those unaware, Ben Folds is one of the best songwriters of this generation and is the best thing to happen to the piano since Elton John and Billy Joel.  From his Ben Folds Five indie-piano-rock roots, to his sentimental love songs, Ben is the best of the best.  Everything he releases is musical gold and we are lucky to have a songwriter of his caliber creating and releasing new content.

For those of you that haven’t listened to Ben, I will give you some songs to start with, beginning with early in his career when he was the front man of 90s alternative rock group, Ben Folds Five.  If you haven’t listened to this guy before - please do.  You will thank me…

GREAT BEN FOLDS FIVE TUNES:

“Jackson Cannery”, “Video” (from 1995’s Ben Folds Five)
“Fair”, “Kate”, “The Battle of Who Could Care Less” (from 1997’s Whatever & Ever Amen)
“Army” (from 1999’s The Unauthorized Biography Of Reinhold Messner)

GREAT BEN FOLDS SOLO TUNES:

Every single song from 2001’s Rockin’ The Suburbs (which is also the #1 album of the 2000s)
“Landed”, “Late”, “Sentimental Guy” (from 2005’s Songs For Silverman)
“All U Can Eat”, “There’s Always Someone Cooler Than You” (from 2003’s Sunny 16 EP)

‘IN A WORLD’ GUY DIES, MOURNING ENSUES

“Don LaFontaine, the voiceover king whose “In a world …” phrase on movie trailers was much copied — and much parodied — has died, according to media reports. He was 68…”

Sniffle Sniffle.

GOOGLE TO RELEASE BROWSER

In an attempt to furthermore take over your internet experience, Google joins Disney in the race to take over the world - but via a much scarier avenue.  Did you know that Google has plans to eavesdrop on your computer’s microphone and camera?  I don’t trust Google and I will not be using their new browser codenamed “Chrome” set to release this week. WEEKLY POP CULTURE UPDATE (7.22.08)

Ass of The Week : Christian Bale

According to reports, Christian Bale, who plays Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman, in The Dark Knight, assaulted his mother and sister in London over the weekend. They say never hit a girl … and one would assume that your MOTHER AND SISTER are at the top of that list. I just want to know, was he wearing the suit? Maybe he was pissed he had to use that lame Batman voice for half of the movie.

The Dark Knight - #1 on IMDB.com Top 250

There have been a lot of pissed off The Godfather fanboys as well as overzealous Batman fanboys at the largest internet movie database on earth, IMDB.com. The Dark Knight has taken over the #1 spot on IMDB’s Top 250 Movies Of All Time list (held by The Godfather as long as I can remember). New movies are generally inflated on the list and after a few weeks begin to cool down, but it doesn’t look like The Dark Knight is going anywhere anytime soon. I don’t think it’s the best movie of all time, but neither is The Godfather

Download of The Week:
One Day As A Lion - EP

My favorite vocalist of all time, Zack De La Rocha of Rage Against The Machine, has FINALLY released his long awaited solo project, One Day As A Lion with the drummer from The Mars Volta. Released today, July 22, 2008, this EP is phenomenal. “Wild International” is old school Zack at his best and would fit in great on any Rage album. Buy this now.

Marketing majors take note. It does not get any better than this, folks.

The Dark Knight - A TSF Review

The Dark Knight, REVIEWED.

Earlier this month I wanted to see Ironman so badly that one weekday night when all of my friends were out of town, I decided to go alone. It was the best superhero movie I’d ever seen … Until now.

The Dark Knight not only surpassed expectations, it raised the bar for all action/adventure and superhero movies soon to come. It ’s run time sits around 2 hours 30 minutes, but there wasn’t a moment during this movie that I became restless or checked my watch. Every passing minute was entertainment at its highest value and Heath Ledger’s interpretation of The Joker was a major contributor.

One of the best scenes in cinematic history depicts The Joker walking out of a hospital with the sheer look of madness on his face while he murmurs to himself with blatant disregard for human life. The movie tugs at your heartstrings and doesn’t let go as Batman’s moral compass is compromised. The minute I stepped out of this movie I began to plan when I would go see it again.

5/5 Stars. This movie would sneak into my Top 20 Movies of All Time list.
